How to Keep Your Flowers Fresh in the Dubai Heat: The Ultimate Guide
Living in Dubai means enjoying sunshine year-round, but it also presents a unique challenge for flower lovers: The Heat.
Whether you’ve just received a signature bouquet from Papaya Flowers or picked up some blooms from our Al Quoz studio, you want them to last. The transition from an air-conditioned delivery van to a warm entryway can stress fresh stems.
But don’t worry keeping your flowers vibrant in the UAE climate is easier than you think. Here are our top 5 expert tips to extend the life of your floral arrangements.
1. The Water Rule: Cool and Clean
In colder climates, room-temperature water is fine. In Dubai, however, tap water can sometimes run warm.
-
The Tip: Fill your vase with cool (not ice-cold) water.
-
Why: Cool water helps keep the stems crisp and slows down the blooming process, which preserves the flower's life.
-
Maintenance: Change the water every two days. Bacteria grow faster in warm environments, and cloudy water is the number one enemy of fresh roses and hydrangeas.
2. Give Them a Fresh Cut
When flowers are out of water (even for the short drive from our studio to your home), the ends of the stems seal up.
-
The Tip: Trim about 1-2 cm off the bottom of the stems at a 45-degree angle.
-
Why: The angle increases the surface area for water absorption, ensuring your flowers can drink properly.
3. Location is Everything (Avoid the AC Vent!)
This is the most common mistake we see in Dubai homes.
-
The Tip: Keep your bouquet away from direct sunlight and direct air conditioning blasts.
-
Why: While flowers like it cool, a direct draft from the AC will dehydrate the petals rapidly. Similarly, placing them near a window with direct Dubai sun will wilt them in hours. Find a cool, shaded spot with indirect light.
4. Feed Your Flowers
Did your Papaya Flowers bouquet come with a small packet of flower food? Use it!
-
The Tip: Dissolve the packet in the water when you first arrange your flowers.
-
DIY Alternative: If you don't have flower food, a teaspoon of sugar (for energy) and a few drops of bleach (to kill bacteria) can work wonders in a pinch.
5. Remove Wilting Stems Immediately
Flowers bloom and fade at different rates. A mixed floral design might have lilies that last a week and hydrangeas that are more sensitive.
-
The Tip: As soon as you see a single flower wilting or turning brown, remove it from the vase.
-
Why: Dying flowers release ethylene gas, which acts as a signal to the other flowers to start dying too. Keeping the bunch "clean" helps the remaining fresh blooms survive longer.
